- He can run very fast / He’s able to run very fast.
- Look at me. I can ride a bicycle without using my hands. (
I’m able to ride…)
- That house can be bought for 1 million. (
That house is able to be bought)
- Do you want a game? Sorry, I can’t play chess. (
I’m not able to play)
Разница между can, could и be able to
Мы используем could или be able to если говорим о способностях в их общем понимании.
- Jack could (was able to) play the guitar quite well.
Если мы говорим о единичном достижении, то используем be able to.
- We were able to win the match even though we didn’t have our best player.
- I looked all over the house but couldn’t find my keys anywhere.
- We could smell the strong scent of paint when we came into the house.
- I was so tired, all I could do was have dinner and fall asleep.
- The only thing I could think of was how to finish work as soon as possible.
- The ceiling was so low I could almost touch it.
Модальные глаголы can и could
Модальные глаголы can и could, при употреблении в одном и том же предложении, могут поменять его смысл.
- It could be expensive to have a car. (Иметь машину может ударить по карману) – в данном случае описывается предположение о том, что машину иметь дорого. При этом нет 100%-ой вероятности, что это так. Это может быть дорого, а может и нет.
- It can be expensive to have a car. (Содержать машину может быть дорого) – в данном примере говориться о том, что иногда машину действительно содержать дорого)
- There can’t be many people who haven’t had difficulty with smart TV.
- We can stay with Jack on our way to France – большая вероятность, что мы сможем остановиться у Джека.
- We could stay with Jack on our way to France – нет точной уверенности, что мы сможем остаться у Джека.
Could и be allowed to
Модальный глагол could и выражение was/were allowed to выражают позволение совершить действие в прошлом.
- We couldn’t fish there because it was private property./ We weren’t allowed to fish there because it was private property.
- Although I didn’t have a ticket, I was allowed to come in.
- I couldn’t (wasn’t allowed to) stay up later than 11 p.m because I would have to sit the exam next morning.
